indicator, one main and auxiliary operating panel and emergency controls as required. Provide hall
lanterns for each car and a single riser of call buttons within each elevator lobby.
Hoistway/Pit
The hoistway should be fire rated and include a smoke detector at the top, but does not require a
heat detector. The National Building Code requires that all elevator hoistways be vented to prevent
the accumulation of gases and smoke. The required vent shall be controlled by a motorized louver,
which is powered closed. This louver shall open upon loss of electrical power or by a signal from the
hoistway smoke detector.
Both passenger and service elevators shall include the following components located in the elevator
pit:

♦ Oil return scavenger pump. VA does not permit submersible pump units.
These elevator pits shall be constructed per American Society of Mechanical Engineers A17.1 Safety
Code and provided with sprinklers.
Power
For main power each elevator shall be provided with a separate three phase supply through a shunt
trip circuit breaker located in the machine room adjacent to the entry with clear access. When the
machine room is sprinkled, provide heat detectors located within 18 inches of each sprinkler head.
The heat detectors, when activated, shall trip the shunt trip circuit breakers. If an emergency
generator is not available, then hydraulic elevators shall be provided with energizing to the down
