(a) An Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) certified and/or licensed
structured cabling systems contractor that is able to pass through and
support the OEM's warranty and guarantee to VA and, who is technically
approved in writing by TCD-194D, shall be retained by the General
Contractor to provide all telecommunications wiring (copper) and
cabling (coaxial and fiber-optic) and associated terminating and
distribution equipment. The A/E's design shall provide adequate space
for equipment and cable termination and unobstructed wireways or cable
and wire paths as described herein for the facility.
(b) Provide all system wires and cables in a mixture of covered cable
cable ladders, telecommunications outlets or alternates specifically
approved by TCD-194D. Also, provide STP or UTP, fiber-optic, coaxial
wires and cables and other distribution equipment and/or items as
described herein.
(c) Provide cable and/or wire pathways for the systems including
manholes, junction or pull boxes, interface and/or other items as
described herein and in accordance with the NEC. The design of the
pathway(s) in existing buildings shall incorporate the required
existing Facility TIP cable duct or tray, wireways and conduit
distribution systems. The A/E's design shall instruct the Contractor to
remove and dispose of all unused existing distribution wires, cables
and pathway equipment not incorporated in the new or replacement
pathway system and update the Facility's TIP records according to VA
Resident Engineer (RE) or designated Facility Contracting Officer.
(d) The A/E's design shall be confirmed by the respective OEM and
provide clear instructions for the installation of the wire and/or
cable pathway and distribution systems. Access shall be granted to the
systems TELCO and Equipment Room(s) and Telecommunications Closets no
later than 10 weeks prior to the delivery of the telephone and/or data
equipment.
(e) Plenum/CMP rated wire or cable shall be provided in all areas of
the Facility rated as "Plenum" locations. Non-Plenum/CM wire or cable
may be provided in all other areas. The type of wire or cable to be
used depends on whether or not the wire or cable traverses active
environmental controlled air spaces, local environmental hazards and
Facilities Chief Engineer directives at a minimum.
(f) Wire or cable runs may be provided without conduit, cable duct or
wire ways in non-critical areas. These wires or cables shall be
fastened at such close intervals as described in VA Specification
Section 16742 Infrastructure (Wire and Cable), Telecommunications
Equipment and Systems to prevent sagging and to maintain clearance
above suspended ceilings. Wires or cables shall not be attached to or
supported by the suspended ceilings.
(g) Low-voltage wires or cables may be provided inside dry walls in
flexible conduit or without conduit at the direction of the Facility's
Chief Engineer in writing for each specific location. Wire mold will
not be approved for wire or cable on the outside of walls.
