SPECIAL MEDICAL AND ALARM SYSTEMS
9.1 GENERAL
The VA uses nonflammable anesthetics in Operating Rooms in Surgical
Service and Medical Research Service. Installations in these areas
shall conform to the applicable portions of NFPA 99 that pertain to
nonflammable anesthetics. In addition, Isolated Power Units shall be
installed at selected locations as described herein and shall serve
loads associated with these areas.
9.2 ISOLATED POWER UNITS (IPUs)
(a) Human Operating Rooms (Surgical Service): Provide Isolated Power
Units as follows:
(1) Large Rooms (Neuro/Cardiac and Orthopedic): Two 7 1/2 KVA,
14-circuit units
(2) General Rooms Two 7 1/2 kVA, 12-circuit units
(3) Cystoscopic Rooms and Minor ORs of Surgery Suite: Two 5 kVA,
10-circuit units
* IPU's not required in Minor ORs of Ambulatory Care.
(4) IPU's should be located in opposite corners or in opposite walls
and serve receptacles and devices nearest to them.
* Caution: Recess depth of IPU's can be from 200 to 300 mm (8 to 12
inches). Units in the same room shall have their ground buses tied
together with a minimum No. 4 conductor.
(5) Except for general ceiling lighting and X-Ray, the units shall
serve power to receptacles, surgery lights, and permanently wired
devices in the patient vicinity.
(b) Special Procedures Rooms (Radiology Service):
(1) Provide a 5 kVA, 10-circuit isolated power unit in each room.
(2) Except for general ceiling lighting and X-Ray, the units shall
serve power to receptacles and accessory equipment within the room.
(c) Procedures Rooms (Cardiovascular Laboratories): Provide an IPU in
each room similar to that for Special Procedures Rooms.
(d) Animal Operating Rooms (Medical Research Service):
(1) Provide a 5 to 7 1/2 kVA Isolated Power Unit for each operating
table in every Animal Operating Room. Locate in permanent wall nearest
to the table served.
