Electronic high-frequency type ballasts shall be used for all
areas except Animal Research Spaces, Libraries (within a 6 m (20 ft.)
sphere from the book detectors) or any other areas as specifically
directed.
All other fluorescent lamp types shall utilize the standard
electromagnetic core-and-coil type.
6.8 FIXTURES
(a) Specify fixtures having high efficiency (output/bare lamp lumens),
where practicable, within the visual constraints dictated by the
application.
(b) Specify fixture types which utilize controlling elements (lenses,
louvers, reflectors, etc.) designed to provide the best utilization of
emitted light at the task location. Use parabolic louver equipped
fixtures in office areas, Nurses Stations, and similar spaces where CRT
equipment is generally used.
(c) In addition to two-lamp and four-lamp fluorescent fixtures, utilize
three-lamp fixtures as required to tailor the lighting design closer to
(d) Exit Fixtures:
(1) Provide exit light fixtures in accordance with NFPA 101, Life
Safety Code. Fixture style (LEDs) will be selected by the Engineer or
as described in VA Master Specification Section 16510, "Building
Lighting Interior."
(2) Connect exit lights to a separate life safety circuit(s) using a
design load of 7W (watts) maximum, per fixture.
(3) Indicate double-faced fixtures and/or directional arrows on the
drawings, where required.
(4) For exit fixtures in Psychiatric Units, use the metal stencil faced
type with non-glass translucent backing material.
6.9 LIGHTING LAYOUTS
(a) Use VA illumination levels as design values and not as minimums.
Select the number of lamps and the fixture type according to the
recommended finishes specified in each area to ensure the intended
lighting levels.
(b) In Offices, Examination Rooms and similar spaces with non-fixed
task locations which require 645.6 lux (60 foot candle) or greater,
position ends of fluorescent fixtures (or rows) within 750 mm (2-1/2
ft.) of abutting walls. Select fixtures and lamp quantities to provide
the required lighting level.
