piping and above the electrical equipment to protect it from water
leaks. Standard ceiling height must be maintained in the room. Drip
pans and troughs shall not be acceptable substitutes for membrane
waterproof ceilings.
(d) Transformer and Switchgear: Rooms in which oil-filled transformers
or switches are located shall be 3-hour fire resistant construction,
and shall comply with all the requirements for transformer vaults in
Article 450 of the National Electrical Code. Where sprinklered, l-hour
fire rated construction is permitted. These rooms shall have a minimum
100 mm (4-inch) high door sill. Floor drains shall not be included in
any Electrical Room. (See also VA Construction Standard CD-3, "Piping,
Ducts, and Electrical Conduits-Emplacement of.") The rooms shall have
the necessary mechanical ventilation or cooling system to maintain the
indoor temperature range required for proper operation of the
equipment.
5.3 ELECTRICAL FACILITIES FOR OPERATING ROOMS
5.3.1 REFERENCES
Refer to Articles 3.4.3, 3.4.10 and 3.4.17 for additional information
regarding receptacle layouts.
5.3.2 ISOLATED POWER SYSTEMS FOR GENERAL USE IN HUMAN OPERATING ROOMS
IN SURGICAL SERVICE
(a) One or more isolated power panels (with transformer, line isolation
electrical apparatus within the Operating Room (receptacles, surgery
lights, film viewers, etc.), except for general ceiling lights and X-
ray equipment.
(b) Sixteen to twenty-four single "Hospital Grade" NEMA type 5-2OR
electrical receptacles shall be distributed on the walls, ceilings or
service columns for general use in every Operating Room. The actual
number of receptacles, their locations and the consequent number of
power panels per room shall be determined during the design process.
Not more than one receptacle shall be connected to a single isolation
panel circuit and identified as to its serving panel and the circuit
number in the panel, except for receptacles in service columns.
(1) For General Purpose and for Special Procedure Operating Rooms
(e.g., cardiac/neurological), the isolated power system shall not be
less than a total of 15 kVA.
(2) For Cystoscopic Operating Rooms, the isolated power system shall be
not less than a total of 10 kVA.
