Power Distribution Unit
Isolated, clean power shall be provided for non-linear IT loads not powered by a UPS, like personal
computers, network electronics, laser printers, and scanners. Isolated power shall be provided by a
dedicated Power Distribution Unit or power panel connected to or containing a K-13 or higher
isolation transformer. The isolation transformers shall be sized, installed and protected per
manufacturer's recommendations, code requirements and include an allowance for 30 percent
additional capacity. The associated PDU/distribution panel will provide power to orange isolated
ground receptacles for non-linear loads in general office areas. PDUs/power distribution panels
shall have a minimum of 30 percent spare, three pole breaker spaces and 10 percent spare single,
two phase and three phase breakers as are required for initial equipment installation. Isolated
power circuits shall be installed with oversized neutrals to reduce neutral heating. Neutrals shall
have current ratings of at least 1.7 times the phase rating to achieve these results. For more

Use the guidance provided by NFPA 780, Appendix H, to determine whether lightning protection is
required. Local practices should also be considered.
Site Lighting
Site lighting levels shall be 15 horizontal maintained footcandles at vehicular and pedestrian
entrances and five horizontal maintained footcandles for perimeter and vehicular and pedestrian
circulation areas. Site lighting shall comply with NEC and International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC).
Fire/Life Safety System
Provide a fire/life safety system, including smoke detectors, fire alarms, heat detectors and
emergency backup lighting, to meet the requirements of NFPA and/or the local codes.
