provided wires or cables are protected, secured from falling out and
separated from other systems.
(d) Each open wireway, partitioned cable tray and/or conduit shall
comply with NFPA 70, National Electrical Code (NEC) Articles 250, 517,
600, 700, 725 and 800, VA Master Construction Specification Section
16111 and Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) 1069 and 1459.
(e) Wire and cable runs that are routed from open wireways or cable
trays in interstitial spaces to the nearest telecommunications closet,
head end or Equipment Room or telecommunications outlet shall be
enclosed in conduit. However, the use of cable racks or ladders,
installed from the telecommunications closet, is preferred above the
ceiling for station cable installation in non-critical areas as long as
each location's egress and ingress signal processing, radiation and
7.6 WIREWAYS OR CABLE TRAYS (ENCLOSED WITH HINGED COVERS)
(a) Enclosed wireways or cable trays are to be installed in
interstitial spaces. They shall have a minimum size of 150 mm x 150 mm
(6 inches X 6 inches) and originate at the riser backboards in the
telecommunications closets or as described herein. A minimum of 250 mm
(10 inches) clearance shall be maintained around the wireway or cable
tray and there shall be a maximum of two (2) 90 degree turns or total
of 180-degrees of pathway direction change in any 75 m (250 ft.) run.
(b) The use of cable racks or ladders is not allowed for special
systems certified for life and public safety and emergency operations
unless specifically approved by TCD-194D, in writing, prior to system
design and installation.
7.7 TELECOMMUNICATIONS DUCTS AND/OR CELLULAR FLOORS

7.10 INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
(a) Special systems in new, renovated or leased VA Facilities shall be
provided according to the appropriate 16000 series portions of the
Standards contained herein at a minimum.
(b) VA Master Construction Specifications, technically approved by
VHA's TCD-194D, are considered the minimum Telecommunication System
Installation, Operation and Standard Requirements for all VHA
