The minimum number of electrical receptacles necessary to accommodate
appliances ordinarily required for local tasks or likely to be used in
patient care emergencies.

4.5.5 TASK ILLUMINATION
Provision for the minimum lighting required to carry out necessary
tasks in the described areas, including safe access to supplies and
equipment and to exits.
4.6 ESSENTIAL ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS FOR HOSPITALS
The Essential Electrical systems for hospitals shall comply with the
Type 1 system as defined in NFPA 99. Refer to VA Design and
Construction Procedures (PG-18-3), "National Disasters Non-Structural
Resistive Design" for requirements in national disaster areas.
4.6.1 EMERGENCY SYSTEM
The emergency system shall consist of two separate branches--The Life
Safety Branch and Critical Branch, which shall provide power to the
selected functions listed in NFPA 70 and 99.
4.6.1.1 LIFE SAFETY BRANCH
Shall supply power for the following devices:
(a) Alarm and Alerting Systems such as Fire Alarm and Medical Gas
Systems
(b) Automatic Doors: Used for building egress
(c) Communication Systems: If used during emergency conditions, they
shall include:
(1) Disaster Control or Emergency Communication Centers, i.e.
communication equipment, selected receptacles and task illumination
(2) Public Address System (PA)
(d) Elevators: Cab lighting, controls, intercom, signal systems, and
elevator machine room lighting
(e) Exit Signs
emergency battery-powered lighting units and selected receptacles
(g) Illumination of Means of Egress
