(b) Where the project involves extending an existing system but the
existing equipment spare parts are not available, the Engineer should
inform the VA Project Manager in writing. Specific directions will be
given at that time.
1.15.6 CONDUIT AND JUNCTION BOXES (BOXES)
(a) Conduit and boxes in existing walls to be demolished shall be
removed.
(b) Conduit and boxes in existing walls to remain shall be abandoned in
place (if not reused) and the boxes shall be provided with blank
covers.
(c) Conduit in existing or new ceilings that is not intended for reuse
shall be removed back to the panel from where it originates.
(d) Conduits that had been run in the existing concrete slab shall be
saw-cut off as they enter the slab and then sealed to prevent moisture
access.
1.15.7 CONDUCTORS
(a) Conductors with deteriorated or damaged insulation shall be
replaced. The Engineer may wish to have the conductor meggered to
assure insulation integrity.
(b) Conductors that are not deemed reusable shall be removed back to
the nearest junction box. Where the entire circuit is to be removed,
the conductors shall be removed back to the panelboard from which they
emanate.
(c) Disconnection and removal of telephone cabling may not be the
responsibility of the Contractor. Verify with the VAMC.
(d) Disconnection and removal of communication, Nurse Call, Fire Alarm
wiring, etc., shall be the responsibility of the Contractor.
(e) Contractor shall not attempt to fish new conductors through an
existing conduit with existing conductors. All conductors shall be
replaced.
1.15.8 WIRING DEVICES
(a) Remove devices that are not installed at reusable locations. Boxes
shall be blanked.
(b) Existing receptacles and switches in good condition, located at
acceptable places, may be reused. Non-hospital-grade receptacles shall
be replaced in all patient areas, Exam or Treatment Rooms with
hospital-grade receptacles.
