VA Space Planning Criteria (Chapter 402)

The total number of MTOT Students/Trainees (Maximum number of trainees typically
on duty at one time) indicates the number being instructed in the Department of
Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center at the same time. The net square foot
requirement per trainee is that increment of space to train one student. (Do not
include trainees already accounted for in other chapters).
1. Classroom, Students,
Trainees, House Staff (XXXXX) ........................................... 300 NSF (27.9 NSM)
Minimum NSF. Provide an additional 10 NSF per Student, Trainee, and House
Staff FTE position greater than thirty. Maximum 450 NSF.
This space is provided for those Students, Trainees and House Staff not covered
by other chapters or by nursing units. Do not duplicate space.
2. Study Cubicle (XXXXX) ............................................................32 NSF (3.0 NSM)
Provide one per whole increment of two Students / Trainee FTE position
authorized.
This space should be located adjacent to the Health Science Library.
3. Office, Psychiatry House Staff (XXXXX) ............................. 120 NSF (11.2 NSM)
Provide one per Psychiatry House Staff FTE position authorized.
Do not duplicate space if provided on Nursing Units.
4. Cubicle, Other House
Staff / Fellows (XXXXX)............................................................64 NSF (5.9 NSM)
Provide one per Other House Staff / Fellows FTE position authorized.
5. Office, Psychology
and Social Work Trainees (XXXXX) ......................................100 NSF (9.3 NSM)
Provide one per Psychology and Social Work Trainee FTE position authorized.
6. Office, Instructors (XXXXX) ...................................................100 NSF (9.3 NSM)
Provide one per Instructor FTE position authorized and one per .6 FTE and
greater Instructor FTE position authorized.

This space is provided for Chief or Assistant Chief Level Trainees.
