h. Dining and Recreation areas are to be adjacent. There should be a minimum of 500 NSF dedicated recreation space. In a
120 bed unit, dining will be in two shifts. The space should be designed to accommodate 70 diners (10 overflow), two -thirds in
wheelchairs and five attendants.
i. Serving line or tray service will be decided on a project basis. If the central kitchen of the main VA facility has the
capacity to make up trays for the nursing homes without requiring major construction, tray service will be used. If tray service
would require additional major construction to the central kitchen, then a serving line would be put in the nursing home.
j. When the Nursing Home Care Unit is located on two floors, 1/3 of the dining area space is to be located on the second
floor. Dedicated recreatio n space remains on the first floor.
