CHAPTER 106. VETERANS HEALTH ADMINISTRATION - NURSING HOME CARE UNITS
1. APPROVAL OF CRITERIA
Criteria approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) on April 11, 1990.
2. DEFINITION
a. A Nursing Home Care Unit is a specialized nursing facility designed to care for patients with long term illness requiring
preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative nursing care services. Nursing, medical and related health care is provided in a
homelike environment with specialized clinical and diagnostic services available at the medical center facilities.
b. These criteria apply to all renovation, modernization and new construction projects for VA Nursing Home Care Units.
Appropriate modification may be necessary when existing facilities are being renovated.
c. Refer to the following space criteria chapters to determine additional requirements: Chapter 410, Environmental
Management Service, LLTS.
3. PROGRAM DATA REQUIRED
a. Projected number of beds.
b. Staffing projects by category.
c. Projected number of floors.
d. Is the Nursing Home Care Unit located in a separate building?
e. Type of food service (e.g., tray make -up, serving unit, existing dining room and kitchen facilities).
f. Is there a decentralized unit dose pharmacy program?
