VA hires the best A/E firms in the country and yet we experience repeated
errors and omissions on every project. These are not new or unusual items,
but they consistently get past A/E and VA quality assurance reviews and result
in construction change orders. Please review your project documents and
make sure you do not make these mistakes.
Site and Landscape, Contract Document Phase :
o Verify subsoil investigation is complete for all areas affected by construction including utility
lines, and pay special attention to identifying rock type and extent;
o Show all existing utilities whether they are reused or not within or directly adjacent to the
construction area. Utilities can be above or below ground;
o Clearly show all new curb and gutters on drawings;
o Verify the location of existing trees, some existing trees near new construction are missed on
the landscape survey and not shown on the contract drawings;
o Trees to remain must be shown with tree protection devices; and new trees have to be
planted, if they are destroyed during clearing and grubbing operations.
