Spinal Cord Injury Center Design Guide
July 1990 (Rev. Jan. 2004)
Foreword
This document is intended to be a graphic consolidation of existing Department of
Veterans Affairs criteria. It contains data from the following sources:
PG-18-1.............................Master Construction Specifications
PG-18-3.............................Design and Construction Procedures
PG-18-4.............................Standard Details
PG-7610 ............................Equipment Guide List
PG-18-6.............................Equipment Reference Manual
Handbook 7610 .................Space Planning Criteria for VA Facilities
PG-18-13 ...........................Barrier-Free Design Guide
PG-18-14 ...........................Room Finishes & Door Hardware Schedule
Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards and various technical criteria pertaining
to Electrical, Architectural, HVAC, and Plumbing.
Our purpose is to make the above USER-FRIENDLY and to serve as an index to these
sources when data is either too detailed or too broad to be contained here.
The SCI Design Guide was developed to assist designers. It also is intended to assist
the user/client in better understanding the choices that designers ask them to make.
The guideplates contained in the SCI Design Guide are intended as an illustration of the
VA's furniture, equipment, and personal space needs. They are not meant to be a limit
on design opportunities.
This Design Guide was not intended to be project-specific. While it does contain the
majority of spaces that occur in SCI Design, it is not possible to encompass all
possibilities. It is therefore recommended that the project-specific space program be
the starting point for any individual project design.
