7.1
Floor slab depressions are required in specific areas or rooms for
the purpose of providing slopes in floors to:
a. Direct water into drains
b. Insure that the floor of prefabricated rooms and access
floors are level with the corridor floor
c. Provide clearance for equipment
d. Provide space for the installation of shielding in certain
areas and
e. Provide for special floor finishes that require a setting
bed.
7.2
Minimum required depressions are:
Ceramic Floor Tile with Slope to Drain
mm (3")
75
Quarry Tile Floor without Drain
mm (2")
50
Quarry Tile Floor with Slope to Drain
mm(4")*
100
100 mm (4") to 200
mm (8")
to accommodate the equipment specified plus the additional
depth necessary for the required floor finish.
*
Use 75 mm (3") plus thickness of floor finish for VA Hospital
Building System (VAHBS) construction.
7.3
The above list may not include all the areas where floor slab
depressions are required for a specific project. It is the
responsibility of the project designers to ensure that the listed
depressions are adjusted to suit the actual equipment provided and
to satisfy the actual conditions required by the design.

EXTERIOR ENTRANCES AND PLATFORMS:
8.1
Provide a non-combustible canopy over the main entrance to a
nursing home care unit. The canopy shall extend 600 mm (2 feet)
beyond the curb line to protect patients from inclement weather.
To reduce the size and cost of the canopy, locate the curb line
near the entrance if compatible with other design considerations.
At this main entrance provide an "air lock" consisting of a
vestibule formed by automatically operated doors placed not less
than 6.3 m (21 feet) apart. Automatic sliding doors are
preferred, but if swinging doors are used, both the inner and
outer doors shall swing outward. Provide break-away type
automatic doors that can be manually operated during a power
failure.
8.2
All platforms, ramps and stairs adjacent to entrances shall have
non-slip surfaces.
8.3
All entrances and exits at grade must be accessible to and usable
by persons with disabilities and shall be: (a) free of steps or
other obstructions; and (b) level or provided with ramps.
8.4.
LOADING PLATFORM: If a loading platform is required, it shall be
at least 150 mm (6 inches) above the access-drive paving, but may
be as high as 1200 mm (4 feet), depending on the delivery vehicles
to be used. If delivery vehicles have varying dock requirements,
or are unknown, then a scissors lift should be installed. The
platform shall have a minimum depth of 2.4 m (8 feet), 3.9 m (13
feet) if a scissors lift is used, and shall be covered by a non-
