were suggested from outside the Department.
The Design Guide for CBOC's was developed as
a design tool to assist the lessor, the medical
center and CBOC staff, and the contracting
officers, in better understanding the choices that
designers ask them to make, and to help
designers understand the functional requirements
necessary for proper operation of a CBOC.
Included is a checklist that is covers the areas of
accessibility, interior finishes, leasing and site
considerations.
This design guide is unique in that the Community
Based Outpatient Clinic is a program rather than
a department. VA has embraced this program to
address the issue of becoming more available to
our clients, the veterans. Over a two year span,
hundreds of CBOC's will be springing up
throughout the nation. It is intended that all will
occupy leased space, and a majority (90%) will
use the "Expedited Lease" vehicle to assure quick
response time from conception to occupation.
The lessors will be responsible for translating the
needs of the community, as identified by the local
medical centers, into reality. This design guide
