VA hires the best A/E firms in the country and yet we experience repeated
errors and omissions on every project. These are not new or unusual
items, but they consistently get past A/E and VA quality assurance reviews
and result in construction change ord ers. Please review your project
documents and make sure you do not make these mistakes.
Plumbing, Schematics Phase :
o Record drawings may not be accurate. Discuss with VAMC engineering and
maintenance staff the performance, condition, and capacities of existing plumbing,
medical gases, and fire sprinkler systems that will be connected to proposed
construction. Also, obtain locations of known asbestos insulation of piping; and
o Determine if existing fire sprinkler system needs to be modified for proposed
construction.
o Check roof slopes. Do not locate roof drains in the center of spans - structural
elements often have camber.
