UNSAFE BASEBOARD HEATER THERMOSTATS
ISSUE:
Recalling of electric baseboard heater thermostats by Honeywell.
BACKGROUND:
The Washington Post reported following in its publication dated August 13, 1998:
"Honeywell is recalling about 2,600 electric baseboard heater thermostats sold
between January 1996 and June 1998. The thermostats were rated at 3,800
watts, a higher wattage than they are able to handle. If too much power runs
through them, they can overheat and present a fire hazard. The thermostats
being recalled under the Honeywell name carry the model numbers T4600 or
CT 1650. The thermostat also was sold under the King Chronolux brand name
with the model number K4600S. Owners can call Honeywell toll free at 1-877-
575-4533."
RECOMMENDATION:
VAMCs should be aware of this potential problem. If any VAMC has installed
above thermostats, please contact Honeywell and ask for replacement
thermostats.
