TEMPERATURE CONTROLS IN INTERIOR SPACES
ISSUE:
Temperature controls in the interior patient care areas such as treatment and
examination rooms.
BACKGROUND:
There have been complaints from the occupants that interior patient care areas
are being too cold. This can happen when the design consultants fail to specify
reheat coils for the air terminal units serving these areas. VA HVAC Design
Manual for Hospital Projects recommends reheat coils be provided for these
areas to ensure minimum ventilation at all times. However, reheat coils are not
required for interior non-patient care areas such as offices as the variable air
volume (VAV) air terminal units serving these spaces can be fully closed when the
equipment and lights are turned off.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Follow VA HVAC criteria for VAV systems in the HVAC Design Manual for
Hospital Projects, paragraph A18.
