INDOOR AIR QUALITY
TOPIC: AIR DUCT CLEANING
ISSUE:
Air duct cleaning will improve indoor air quality (IAQ) with both human and operational
benefits.
BACKGROUND:
This design alert is in response to inquiries from several VAMCs concerning air duct
cleaning of their existing systems.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) has published three
documents about professional HVAC system cleaning:
Introduction to HVAC System Cleaning Services; and
NADCA Standard 1992-01, Mechanical Cleaning of Non-Porous Air Conveyance
System Components.

2. Make sure the contractor hired, agrees to perform work in accordance with NADCA
Performance Standard 1992-01 and is a certified member in good standing of NADCA.
3. Ensure the contractor provides before-and-after documentation.
4. Ask to see a cleaning specification, methods proposed for cleaning. Contractor
should provide a Material Safety Data Sheet for each chemical.
5. Ensure the contractor uses only equipment with HEPA filters to protect the indoor
environment.
