PAPERLESS ELECTRONIC RECORDERS FOR
BOILER PLANT MONITORING
ISSUE:
New electronic type recorders are available for boiler plant monitoring.
BACKGROUND:
For many years, recorders in boiler plants have been 24 hour circular paper chart
types which have felt-tip or liquid ink pens. Problems with this type recorder have
included high maintenance on the mechanical linkages which operate the pens
and the large volume of paper charts which must be stored to maintain an
operation record over a period of time.
DISCUSSION:
At least three manufacturers are producing panel-mounted electronic paperless
recorders. These recorders have large liquid crystal displays which have more
features than the paper chart-type recorders. Data is automatically downloaded on
to standard 3.5 inch diskettes for record-keeping. The purchase price of these
recorders is likely to be somewhat higher than the paper chart-type recorders, but
the cost will be recovered in the savings from not purchasing the paper charts, and
pens. The manufacturers include: Chessell, 215-968-0660; Hays-Cleveland, 561-
842-1900; Penny and Giles, 1-800-834-6307.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
VA Master Construction Specification Section 15901, CONTROLS AND
include this new type of recorder along with the paper chart-type recorder.
