STRUCTURAL STEEL IN INTERSTITIAL SPACE
NEEDS TO BE PAINTED
ISSUE:
The VA Master Construction Specifications have been revised to clarify the shop
painting requirement of structural steel in the interstitial space.
BACKGROUND:
Subsection 3.3.C.5 of VA Master Construction Specifications section 05120 states, "Do
not apply shop paint to steel which will be concealed by interior building finish that will
not be subjected to high humidity or moisture". This statement has caused confusion
and concern for the treatment of steel in the interstitial space. Although interstitial space
is an enclosed space, it is subject to humidity and moisture. As such, steel in this area
requires shop paint with primer.
ACTIONS:
Sub-section 3.3, SHOP PAINTING, has been modified as follows:
Deleted sub-section 3.3.C.5 in its entirety.
Added sub-section 3.3.D, which says, "Structural steel in the interstitial space that
does not receive sprayed on fireproofing shall be painted with primer in accordance
with general requirements of shop painting."
Existing sub-section 3.3.D is labeled 3.3.E.
