COOLING TOWER FACTORY TESTS
ISSUE:
Thermal performance certification of cooling towers by Cooling Tower Institute
(CTI).
BACKGROUND:
VA master specification section 15712 specified field tests for cooling towers due
to lack of manufacturers who could provide factory tests certified by CTI. Now,
there are several manufacturers who can provide certification by CTI. Field tests
are more costly and time consuming than factory tests. Some of the manufacturers
who can provide CTI certification are Baltimore Air Coil, Ceramic Cooling Tower,
Evapco, Marley Cooling Tower, Thermal Care, and Tower Tech.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
1. Factory tests performed by CTI licensed testing agency are preferable over
field tests as they are certified by CTI under standard 201-96.
2. VA master specification section 15712 has been updated allowing CTI
certified factory tests, but also allows field tests for cooling towers which are
not CTI certified yet.
