BIOHAZARD SAFETY CABINETS
ISSUE:
Updating of VA criteria, and master construction specifications on biohazard
BACKGROUND:
VA criteria, standard details, and master construction specifications are
undergoing a major update and revision to meet the latest national standards.
Thanks to the Senior Resident Engineer, Stanley S. Slemer, Detroit
Replacement Hospital, for providing direction on this issue.
DISCUSSION:
Our criteria, and master specifications are based on an older version of National
Sanitation Foundation (NSF) standard number 49. This standard is updated
every 4-5 years, and the last revision was made in 1992. NSF is a vital industry
standard for ensuring safety, and performance of BSCs. The manufacturers are
required to be listed, and carry a seal of NSF on their BSCs.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
1. The latest NSF standard requires more work area in the cabinet. It requires
more exhaust air quantities, and the newer cabinets are larger in size.
2. Provide a dedicated exhaust system for each Class II, type B1 and B2 BSC.
3. Locate BSCs away from drafts, active walk ways, and doors.
4. Avoid air distribution patterns in the rooms that impinge on BSC.
