DESIGN ALERT ON :
ISSUE:
Shutoff valves in the oil supply lines of hydraulic elevators that may constitute a
safety hazard.
BACKGROUND:
Certain shutoff valves have been known to develop undetectable cracks at the time
of installation and rupture at a later time. These valves should be replaced for
safety reasons.
DISCUSSION:
There are typically two valves on the oil supply lines. One is located in the elevator
pit and the other is located in the elevator machine room. The valves in question
are labeled by the manufacturer "APOLLO" and may be colored yellow.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
Because of their safety record these valves should be replaced with valves of
another manufacturer meeting ASME A17.1a, rules 303.1 and 303.4a
requirements.
