DESIGN ALERT ON MOTORS AND STARTERS
ISSUE:
Coordination problem between mechanical and electrical on motors and starters.
BACKGROUND:
Several mechanical master specification sections require two speed motors, and
there's no specification available for two speed starters in the electrical master
specifications. Motors are specified under Mechanical (to be furnished by the equipment
manufacturer), and starters are specified under Electrical.
DISCUSSION:
Mechanical specification sections 15712 and 15714 on cooling towers require two
speed motors with single winding. An A/E on a project, under Electrical, specified two
speed starters with two windings resulting in miscoordination and problems at the job
site.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
1. HVAC Professional Group has decided to delete motor winding requirements in
sections 15712 and 15714, and add a spec writer note to alert mechanical designer to
coordinate with the electrical designer motor and starter requirements.
2. Electrical Professional Group is being asked to add two speed starter requirements
in section 16155 `Motor Starters', and add a spec writer note to alert electrical designer
to coordinate with the mechanical designer motor and starter requirements.
