DESIGN ALERT ON LOCKING SYSTEMS
ISSUE:
Increase competition, and save cost, when specifying a new locking system.
BACKGROUND:
By promoting competition between various manufacturers locking systems can be
obtained and service improved. Take advantage of competition, when specifying
locking systems.
DISCUSSION:
Mortise Locking System: Major manufacturers can provide cylinders and locks which
are interchangeable with each other. This permits the use of different lock
manufacturers while maintaining a master key system. Therefore, there is no need to
write proprietary specifications for these locks and cylinders. This should help save first
cost while improving the opportunity for local service.
Cylindrical Locking System: This system is not as interchangeable as the Mortise
locking system. Only a limited number of manufacturers cores can be used for
expansion of the existing system at competitive cost. For instance, Arrow, Best, Falcon,
and Sargents Standard removable cores are compatible and are interchangeable on an
existing master key system, while, Schlage, Yale, and Russwin/Corbin standard
removable cores are not interchangeable on an existing system without special order.
Cylindrical locks conform to ANSI 156.2 , Grade 1.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
Maximize competition when writing specifications that meet your facilities needs.
