DESIGN ALERT ON SEISMIC MECHANICAL DETAILS
ISSUE:
Deletion of standard details on seismic bracing of heating, ventilating, and air
conditioning (HVAC) work.
BACKGROUND:
The HVAC Design Manuals and Master Construction Specifications were revised
allowing A/Es to use either NUSIG (National Uniform Seismic Installation Guidelines) or
SMACNA (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association) details in
place of VA standard details. This effort was closely coordinated with FM's structural
community for consistency. Consequently, several details stated below are no longer
applicable. The mechanical standard details are presently being converted to CADD by
a private vendor, and following details will not be included in them.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
1. The A/Es should not use following VA standard details where NUSIG or SMACNA
details are included in the design. Please verify this on current projects, which are
under design:
