DESIGN ALERT ON RADIOGRAPHIC/FLUOROSCOPIC ROOMS
CEILING LAYOUT COORD INATION
ISSUE:
Overhead equipment support, ceiling, and lighting coordination.
BACKGROUND:
On several projects, the A/Es either failed to show unistrut system or showed it
incorrectly to support overhead equipment. This has caused considerable problems
during construction.
DISCUSSION:
To illustrate this problem, on one project the A/E failed to show unistruts in these
rooms. A change order was issued to provide the unistrut system. Unfortunately, the
contractor, due to miscommunication, installed the struts in the wrong direction. This
resulted in interference with the overhead lighting fixtures which could not be serviced.
A completion item was issued to correct this situation, and lighting fixtures had to be
changed. A somewhat similar problem occurred on another project where the unistruts
were shown in the wrong direction and had to be revised by change order.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
1. During design the equipment location and the unistrut system must be coordinated
with the lighting system. Although the equipment sizes/dimensions and weight can vary
somewhat with the manufacturers. Ensure the A/E shows location of unistruts and
their direction with respect to the lighting fixtures.
2. Resident Engineer must verify location of unistruts and coordinate with the equipment
actually purchased before proceeding with the ceiling construction, lighting and
installation of unistruts.
