DESIGN ALERT FROM PROCATS
(PROACTIVE CLAIMS ANALYSIS AND TRACKING SYSTEM)
ISSUE:
Adequacy of building structural design to resist lateral forces.
BACKGROUND:
According to ProCATS data, change orders of about ,000 were issued on three
projects to correct A/E errors and omissions. The A/E failed to provide proper design of
structural members to resist lateral forces caused by wind, seismic, or earth fill.
Additional bracings, supports, and moment connections were added. In some cases
beam sizes were changed during construction.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
The structural engineers are requested to remind the A/Es to recheck their design for
lateral forces imposed on the building elements.
