DESIGN ALERT FROM PROCATS
(PROACTIVE CLAIMS ANALYSIS AND TRACKING SYSTEM)
ISSUE:
Prime painting of structural steel within the interstitial space.
BACKGROUND:
According to ProCATS data, a credit of about ,000 was accepted on a project for
deletion of prime painting of structural steel within the interstitial area. According to the
contractor, the project specifications on this item is not clear and offered a credit of
,000 to settle this issue. VA's position was, although contract documents required
prime painting, there was no real need for this and accepted the credit. VA also found
that in several other projects the steel within the interstitial space was not primed.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
The Architectural and Structural professional groups will discuss this matter and come
up with decision/recommendations whether prime painting of structural steel in the
interstitial area is required or not on future projects. There's a potential of cost savings
in this area.
