DESIGN ALERT FROM PROCATS
(PROACTIVE CLAIMS ANALYSIS AND TRACKING SYSTEM)
ISSUE:
Design of handrails for stairs, parking decks, and balconies etc.
BACKGROUND:
ProCATS data shows the A/Es on two projects did not comply with the Latest Life
Safety Code requirements for designing handrails. For instance, the latest code
requires a maximum gap of 4 inches for vertical elements of handrails. These two
projects showed a spacing of 6 inches. Change orders worth ,000 were issued to
comply with the latest requirements of the code.
RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION:
1. This design alert is intended to remind the A/Es that they have to meet the latest
requirements of the Life Safety Code when designing handrails.
