DESIGN ALERT FROM PROCATS
STEAM PIPING & OUTDOOR DUCTWORK
1. Problems have occurred with steam piping layouts such as no check valves shown
on low pressure steam traps with non-gravity return. Our standard details are ok. This
problem is caused when A/Es try to lift low pressure condensate, and furthermore,
without a check valve. This should not be permitted!
2. Outdoor exposed supply air ductwork is sometimes not properly insulated and
protected from weather. Since we are using more and more roof mounted units, this
should be checked thoroughly. A case in point is where an A/E specified flexible mineral
fiber blanket insulation in place of exterior grade rigid insulation. This change cost VA
,000 which could have been avoided if we or the A/E were alert. Please be informed
that our master construction specification is also weak in this area. Steps are being
taken to strengthen our master specification. Meanwhile, please be alert to guide the
A/Es.
